Adding children to a family policy
Insurers set their own rules for dependent children, including maximum ages, residence and education requirements. Additional-child pricing also varies. Check the terms rather than assuming that all siblings are covered free.
Children-only policies
Some providers allow cover for children without insuring a parent. An adult normally arranges the policy. Check minimum ages, policy ownership and the services available to children.
Newborns and growing families
Contact the insurer promptly when you want to add a baby. Application deadlines, underwriting and start dates vary. A newborn benefit is not the same as comprehensive cover for every condition present from birth.
The details that can make a difference
- Whether local hospitals and specialists treat children of the relevant age.
- Parent accommodation if a child needs an eligible hospital stay.
- Outpatient limits and diagnostic arrangements.
- Mental health benefits and minimum-age restrictions.
- Digital GP services and any age-specific rules.
- Exclusions affecting existing symptoms or conditions.
When children become adults
Check the insurer’s upper age limit and what happens when education or household circumstances change. Discuss continuity options before the child becomes ineligible. Do not assume a new adult policy will retain existing terms automatically.
