What makes a hospital a good fit?

For children, the right setting depends on age, the treatment needed and the paediatric team. These are selected examples of hospitals with published children’s services, not a league table or a clinical endorsement. Availability of a service does not mean your insurance will fund it.
The Portland Hospital, London
Specialist children’s care in London
A dedicated women’s and children’s hospital with paediatric and neonatal intensive-care facilities. Its children’s services and play specialists can be relevant when a family needs specialist support.
Ask about the specific specialty, your child’s age, consultant recognition and whether your policy’s hospital list includes The Portland.
Cromwell Hospital, London
A dedicated children’s department
Its Skyline service has paediatric outpatient and inpatient facilities, treating children from birth until their 18th birthday. It describes private rooms where a parent or carer can stay, dedicated theatre/recovery facilities and play specialists.
Check availability for the required treatment and the insurer’s authorisation for the hospital and consultant.
Spire Bristol Hospital
A regional option in the South West
The hospital publishes outpatient services for ages 0–18 and inpatient services for ages 3–18, including a range of paediatric specialties.
Confirm the minimum age for the exact procedure; outpatient access does not imply eligibility for surgery or an overnight stay.
Spire Manchester Hospital
Different age limits for different care
Published access starts from birth for outpatients, 12 months for day-case theatre and three years for overnight care. An ENT exception allows overnight care from 12 months for children weighing more than 10kg. Pre-admission visits can help children meet the team.
Ask which age and weight rules apply to your child’s procedure, and whether an overnight stay is available if needed.
Six questions to ask before booking
- Does the hospital treat children of this age for this exact condition or procedure?
- Will a paediatric specialist see my child, and who provides care overnight?
- Can a parent stay, and who pays for their accommodation?
- What support is available for anxiety, disability or additional needs?
- Are the hospital and consultant recognised under our policy, and is pre-authorisation required?
- What happens if more complex care or a transfer is needed?
Check with both the hospital and insurer. A hospital’s general age range is not approval for every procedure. For an emergency, use NHS emergency services; private planned-care access is not a substitute.
