Small benefits. Important differences.

A practical guide to birth payments, newborn offers and lower premiums for children.

Birth and adoption payments

Some policies pay a fixed cash benefit when a child is born or adopted. This is a contribution to family costs, not cover for private maternity care or the cost of giving birth.

Insurer / productPublished cash benefitKey conditions
Aviva£100 baby bonusBirth or adoption of a child up to age one; premiums must be up to date. A ten-month qualifying period applies to moratorium or fully medically underwritten cover. Aviva FAQs ↗
Vitality£100 per childPublished core cover includes a birth/adoption payment. The plan must have been held for ten months for a birth payment; confirm adoption eligibility and evidence requirements. Vitality core cover ↗
Freedom Elite£150 per birthAvailable after at least ten months on the plan. Check the benefit in your own Elite policy. Freedom Elite core cover ↗

Tell the insurer promptly and check its claim deadline and evidence requirements. Do not assume a new policy will pay for a baby due soon.

What “free child cover” actually means

Usually, “free” means no additional premium for qualifying younger children once a paying child is included. It does not remove exclusions, excesses or benefit limits.

  • Bupa: with at least two children aged 19 or under on qualifying Bupa By You cover, only the eldest is charged. A separate 10% family discount requires at least one adult and one child. Bupa terms ↗
  • Aviva: only the oldest child under 20 is charged. Aviva family pricing ↗
  • Vitality: its family page advertises eldest-child-only pricing. Confirm ages and eligibility in the quotation. Vitality family pricing ↗
  • Freedom: first-child-only pricing applies to families with no more than three children. Larger families need an individual quotation; charges are capped at four children. Freedom family FAQs ↗

Check what happens at renewal and when the eldest child reaches the age limit. “Free siblings” does not necessarily make the total family policy cheapest.

Adding a newborn

Aviva says a baby registered before three months of age can receive up to three months of free cover, with medical history disregarded and no personal exclusions. Standard policy exclusions still apply. After this deadline, medical underwriting applies. If another child under 20 is already insured, the younger-child pricing rule may continue beyond the newborn offer. Aviva newborn terms ↗

For any insurer, ask when cover starts, whether there is a notification deadline, and how congenital conditions or symptoms present from birth are treated. A parent’s policy does not automatically mean a baby is insured.

Practical support can matter more than a perk

AXA Health Plan lists parent/guardian accommodation for eligible child treatment, plus hotel support for another adult of up to £120 per night and £600 per year. It also lists up to six speech-therapy sessions for qualifying developmental delay in children aged 14 or under who have not already had or planned treatment. These are specific benefits with conditions, not blanket cover for developmental needs. AXA Health family benefits ↗

Ask about accommodation, children’s access to remote GPs, local paediatric specialists and any outpatient limit before giving rewards or discounts too much weight.

Cash plans and company schemes are different

An offer for children on a health cash plan or an employer’s scheme should not be presented as a benefit of a personal private medical insurance policy. For example, WPA advertises free cover for up to five children under 18 on its NHS Top-Up cash plan. That is a different product from Complete Health private medical insurance. WPA NHS Top-Up ↗
