Family Health Insurance · A practical guide

Understanding medical underwriting.

How insurers assess medical history—and why the terms matter for every family member.

Full medical underwriting

You provide the medical information requested in the application. The insurer assesses it and sets out the terms, including any specific exclusions. Answer the questions accurately and check the documents before accepting.

Moratorium underwriting

A moratorium applies rules to previous conditions, symptoms, advice or treatment during a defined period. Some conditions may become eligible later if the policy’s requirements are met. Timeframes and conditions vary; it does not mean all previous conditions are automatically covered after two years.

Switching existing cover

Continuation options depend on the new insurer, the current policy and eligibility. Continued underwriting does not guarantee identical benefits or acceptance of every claim.

Questions worth asking

  • What is excluded for each person?
  • How are previous symptoms considered?
  • What information will be needed when claiming?
  • What changes if we switch insurer?
  • Can I have the terms explained before accepting?
